In 1990 an Islamic group declared a fatwa on Cairo's tallest building, the Cairo Tower, which had long been popular with tourists. They claimed that it's tall 187 metre structure was too phallic and "might excite women." It is also rumoured they were annoyed by courting couples who were regularly caught snogging and committing other indecencies on the balcony. As a sop to the Islamists the Government has gradually raised the admission charge so that ordinary Cairenes can no longer so easily afford such indulgencies. Originally entrance cost just 10 piastres but now Egyptians are charged 8LE - an 8000% increase and foreigners [ perhaps because they are judged even more morally depraved ] 32LE. Atleast, however, the visitor can still enjoy [ at an extra cost of course ] the handsome and friendly waiters in the panoramic cafe dressed in their rather cute pharaonic costumes. It is rumoured that Nasser appropriated CIA money to complete the tower, which was then the world's tallest concrete structure, in April 1961. No one knows whether he hoped the tower would be seen as a giant middle finger gesture to the Americans or perhaps as a giant penis threatening to give the U.S. an uncomfortable ride for its' money.
