A Summary Of The Egyptian Media Attack On The International Day Of Solidarity And Mourning
Although the Egyptian media has been neglecting the International Day of Solidarity and Mourning, but they only started an attack against the demonstrations this week. They attacked Amnesty International, Al-Fatiha organization, gayegypt.com, IGLHRC and other gay rights and human rights organizations. Al Osboa (The Week) a weekly newspaper started the campaign last Monday August 20, 2001. Al-Ahram Al-Araby followed this Saturday August 25, 2001
Al Osboa’s main titles were:
“The World Neglects the massacres of the Palestinians and rouse for the sake of some perverts:”
“The Perverts wage a War Upon Egypt” (Red Big Bold Font)
“The Demand of stopping The American Aids and the Europeans ask for bringing the Association Agreement to a standstill.”
Inside the Newspaper two full pages (PP 10 & 11) were all attacks against Amnesty International, Al Fatiha Organization and other Gay Rights and Human Rights Organization. They accused them of being Zionist and of being suspicious and described the action as declension. (SIC) The Articles were linking the demonstration with what is going in Palestine and Israel (I don’t know what is the connection) in an attempt to rage the public against what is happening. They also highlighted a relation between gay organizations in Israel and Gays in Egypt claiming that the Israeli gay organization “Yediot” asked to accompany the American commission of congressmen visiting Egypt to stand by their “ALIKE”
After telling the news about the action, gayegypt.com was mentioned where it was called the web of the Egyptian perverts. The editor criticized the web page for defending the 52 prisoners and for asking people to Flood the Egyptian embassies and consulates around the world (as part of Al-Fatiha call for action) with phone calls, faxes, and emails calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the detained men.
The paper attacked Al-Fatiha organization that was behind the 15th of August action, which they called “a suspicious organization”. It also called for an Egyptian, Arabic and Islamic opposition against it. It goes so far as calling also for judicial procedures to draw “this holy name (AL-FATIHA) away from this sinful diversion.” They also claimed that Faisal Allam the founder of Al-Fatiha is from Egyptian Origins who is supporting his associates in Egypt.
The paper also published parts of “Crimes of hate, Conspiracy of Silence” Torture and ill-treatment based on sexual identity, an account by Amnesty International which was called a bizarre report by the editor of Al Osboa. The editor started every extract with the phrase “ The Organization Claims that…………” with a side heading “The Organization criticizes the Islamic Countries that punishes perverts.” The analysis hinted that the report is an attack on Islamic law “Shariaa”
Today, Al Ahram Al Arabi’s cover was a photograph of some of the 52 prisoners covering their faces with handkerchiefs. The caption on the cover was:
“Become a Pervert to please Uncle Sam”
“ The Uprising of the perverts”
Inside the magazine, (from p62 to p 71) the same criticize of the action was there. The writer Marwa Meshali claimed that “the culture of perversion is the newest American Product”. The article maintained that there are fifty million pervert in the United States, seventeen million are gay men and the rest are lesbians while there are less than two million perverts in All Europe (sic). The writer also wrote stories about Queen of Britain and Queen of The Netherlands claiming that both prevented Gay people from attending their reception parties at the royal castles among these people were diplomats and ambassadors.
“The Americans release the desires out” “Arabian Confessions on the net” were the titles of another Article by Mohamed Eisa. Eisa condemned The Gay and Lesbian Arab Society (GLAS)’s Web Page as well as AHBAB the voice of GLAS. The journalist described the message board of GLAS as containing “poisoned Messages”. He claimed that Ahbab is a web site for Lesbians only where the leaders are Sultana and Amira who are Lesbians and Drug dealers.(sic)
Hanan Haggag interviewed Hafez Abu Saada, Secretary-General of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) in an Article entitled: “Human Rights Organizations in Egypt Torn Apart The Western Plot” “We’ll Never Defend Debauchery”. In the interview Mr. Abu Saada claimed that the fifty-two are not trilled for being Homosexuals but because they were practicing “prostitution”. He also claimed that there are many evidences proving the charges. (???????? )
Mr Abu Saada said that EOHR is facing a lot of criticism and daily threats on their web page as well as indirect intimidation of stopping the fund they get. He added that The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission is using the late case of ”perverts” to stop any aid or finance coming to the Egyptian human rights organizations, which isn’t effective till now.
Mr. Abu Saada told the journalist that “xyz”, who has been fired from EOHR, has traveled to Geneva to attend a conference of “Perverts” where he became the official representative of the Egyptian perverts and where he attacked the Egyptian government and the Egyptian human rights organizations. Such an announcement can put "xyz" into trouble with the authorities, for example he can be charged of tarnishing Egypt’s image abroad, a charge that faced Mr. Abu Saada himself, as well as facing many problems in such a conservative society. Mentioning his name reminds me of publishing the names, ages and professions of the 55 men in the Queen boat’s case.
Ironically, the press conference that Mr. Abu Saada refers to was organized by the UN journalists. The conference was attended by other Egyptian Human rights activists and no body criticized the Egyptian human rights organizations at all. XYZ has been fired from EOHR for writing an article analyzing the deep political crisis faced by an insecure regime, a threatened gay community, a mediocre press and a shattered rights movement. (see the article at http://www.merip.org/pins/pin64.html)
The Egyptian organizations which refused to interfere in The Queen Boat Case claim to have their reasons as Hesham Qassem of EOHR says “We have our reasons, taking up such a case will jeopardize our credibility with average Egyptians and other cases of human rights [violations] are more worthy of our attention.” Although I don’t agree that some cases are worthier than other cases, but one can understand the argument if the members of the Egyptian Organizations just stayed unbiased. But the fact that they keep on attacking people for their sexual orientation and support the government in faking the facts is not understandable!
Moving to another article, Ashraf Sadek interviewed several professionals in his editorial “The Manufacture of Perversion”, where all of them asserted that homosexuality is a sickness. Dr Ahmad Al-Mahgoub stated that homosexuality is a social disease. Dr Mahmoud Abou El-Azayem affirmed that it is both physical and psychological disease and that in most cases due to being raped when young that one becomes a passive pervert and sometimes one becomes an active one as an opposite reaction (sic). (Active and passive mean Top and bottom) Dr Sami Tousson speaks about “gender” where he claims that people become homosexuals due to being raised up as members of the other sex. And that in most cases the homosexuals are impotent (sic). As For Dr. Emad Fawzy Iskander, he says that the increase of Progesterone hormone in men and testosterone hormone in Women turn them into homosexuals, and adjusting the hormones is the treatment.
“Islam inquires the reasons before burning the perverts” was the title of an article by Mohamed Abd El-Khalek. Abd El-khalek questioned Several men of religion (all Moslems). All agreed that a homosexual should be killed but each one has a different view of the way of execution. Dr Taha Abou Kreisha believes that the homosexual has to be burned alive like what happened during the time of caliph Abu Bakr, to destroy the “microbe” and to “prevent the infection” in order to protect the Islamic nation.
Dr Abd Al-Sabour Shahin states that homosexuals has to be thrown from a mountain or be buried alive under a wall. He also believes that what happened lately is the worse thing that ever happened to our society through out the whole history (sic).
Dr Yehia Ismaeel thinks that the suitable way of execution is up to the Authority, which can be different according to time and place. Shikh Mansour Al-Refaay Ebeid believes that such perversion is due to TV, newspapers, magazines and Internet. He also thinks that the mothers are responsible for turning their sons into perverts by wearing unsuitable clothes in front of their children (SIC).
As for Dr Mohamed Abd Al-Meneam Al-Bary, he believes that we have to give a chance to the perverts for repentance. If a pervert repeats his perversion he has to be either burned alive or thrown from a high mountain.
“Cauterization Is The Most Up-To-Date Treatment” was a different article. By asking Dr Ahmad Shafiq, professor of surgery, he stated that “Anal cauterization” is the most effective treatment because it damages the rectum and makes it narrow so that the passive pervert (bottom) would find difficulty and pain while having intercourse (SIC).
Is it a treatment or a crime? That’s enough!!!!????
