The Library of Alexandria, containing up to half a million documents in the form of papyrus scrolls, covering subjects from mathematics to sexuality, was burnt in 415 during a christian coup d'etat against the nominal Roman prefect.
The library of Alexandria, like the city itself, was founded by Alexander the Great. Every ship calling at the busy mediterranean port was required to surrender any map or document so that it could be copied by scribes for deposit at the library and the original then handed back to the ship's owner. Shortly before the library's destruction in 415 it has been estimated that it held up to half a million documents.
In 412 a new Christian patriarch Cecil was appointed and when in 415 the Roman prefect complained about the expulsion of jews from Alexandria he was silenced by monks who murdered him. In the ensuing turmoil one of the most prominent members of the library - Hyparia - who was not a christian and frequently gave lectures on philosophy and astronomy, was dragged by an angry crowd from her chariot and burnt as a witch. Soon afterwards the library itself was put to the torch.
